Hallym University Medical Center(HUMC) will hold the 13th Hallym-Uppsala International International Symposium at Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital on November 12. The theme will be “Precision Medicine and Innovative Therapies: Global Challenges and Advanced Solutions,” in collaboration with the prestigious Swedish educational institution, Uppsala University.

This symposium aims to seek resolutions to challenges in medicine, such as antibiotic resistance and cancer, through precision medicine and innovative treatments. Recent advancements in treatment methods using cell therapies, theranostics (a combination of therapy and diagnosis), digital twins, and big data will be discussed.

The symposium will run from 9 AM to 5 PM, featuring four sessions with 12 presentations and discussions led by faculty from Hallym University and Uppsala University. In the first session, Professor Dan Andersson, Director of Uppsala Antibiotic Center, will serve as a session chair. Yong Kyun Kim, Associate Professor of Infectious Diseases at Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital will present on “Road to Precision Antibiotic Therapy against Global Antimicrobial Resistance: Hallym-Uppsala Collaboration,” followed by Nikos Fatis-Kavalopoulos, Researcher at Uppsala Antibiotic Center, discussing “Next-Generation Diagnostics for Infectious Diseases: Personalized Antibiotic Combinations and Heteroresistance Detection.”

The second session will cover personalized therapies, including CAR-T cell therapy, which genetically modifies a patient's T cells to attack cancer cells. Presentations include:

Hyeong Su Kim, Professor of Oncology at Hallym University Kangnam Sacred Heart Hospital on “Tailored Precision: Personalized Solid Tumor Antigen-Targeting CAR-T Cell Therapy,” Di Yu, Researcher of Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University on “Next Generation CAR-T Cell Therapy,” Christel Bergström, Professor of Department of Pharmacy, Molecular Pharmaceutics at Uppsala University discussing “Drug Delivery to Enable Precision Medicine: From Theranostics to 3D Printed Medicines” and Se Jin Jeon, Assistant Professor of Pharmacology at Hallym University College of Medicine on “Development of Model Systems and Precision Therapeutics for Neuropsychiatric Disorders.”

The third session will focus on precision medicine utilizing big data. Topics include: Chulho Kim, Professor of Neurology at Hallym University Chuncheon Sacred Heart Hospital on “From Data to Determination: Role of Precision Medicine in Digital Twin Era,” Åsa Johansson, Associate Professor of Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University discussing “Leveraging Large-Scale Molecular and Registry Data to Explore Molecular Heterogeneity in Complex Diseases and Estimate Medication Effects,” Jwa-Kyung Kim, Professor of Nephrology at Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital on “Navigating the Frontier of Neutrophil Activation and Extracellular Traps in Precision Medicine” and Anna-Karin Olsson, Professor of Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology at Uppsala University on “Neutrophil Extracellular Traps as Mediators of Systemic Effects of Cancer.”

The final sesion will address personalized precision medicine in the fields of gastroenterology and cardiology, with presentations by: Ki Tae Suk, Professor of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Hallym University Chuncheon Sacred Heart Hospil on“Precision Medicine inPersonal-Micrbial Relationship” and Tove Fall, Professor of Deprtment of Medical Sciences, Molecular Epidemiology at Uppsala University discussing “Large-Scale Investigations of the Microbiome for Precision Cardiometabolic Health.”

Since HUMC established close academic partnership with Uppsala University in Sweden in 2008, it has held international academic symposiums annually to share the latest medical knowledge and collaborate on technological advancements.
