From December 14 to 16, Professor Keun-Young Lee from Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Hallym University Kangnam Sacred Heart Hospital had delivered a lecture on ‘Cervical Cerclage and Preterm Birth’ at Congress Centre Dubai Festival City with the theme of ‘Birth Congress 2023 - Clinical Challenges of Labor and Delivery.’
This Birth Congress, held by Emirates Obstetrics & Gynecology Society, covered all aspects of childbirth including high-risk pregnancies such as preterm birth.
The Congress consisted of lectures by 64 obstetrics professors from around the world including the US, UK, France, and Canada. In addition, a special session was prepared under the theme of preterm birth. The session was co-hosted by PREIS School, a European medical education center focused on high-risk pregnancy and newborns. It was the only one out of 13 sessions to be broadcast live online.
In the preterm birth session, Professor Keun-Young Lee gave a lecture on various types of topics such as ‘Differences in treatment guidelines for cervical cerclage in each country,’ ‘Research and latest knowledge from the Cervical Incompetence Clinic at Hallym University Kangnam Sacred Heart Hospital,’ ‘Cervical cerclage to prevent preterm birth and a combination treatment with micronized vaginal tablet,’ and his cerclage surgical technique. In addition, various studies were introduced, such as ‘Use of a uniconcave balloon in emergency cerclage’, which was jointly researched with Professors Ga-Hyun Son and Ji-Eun Song of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hallym University Kangnam Sacred Heart Hospital.
Professor Keun-Young Lee said, “I was happy to be able to exchange opinions on high-risk pregnancies with world-renowned professors,” and added, “I will continue to conduct research to save the precious lives of mothers and children.”
Hallym University Kangnam Sacred Heart Hospital is the only hospital among university hospitals that operates cervical incompetence clinic. It has performed about 6,500 cases of cervical cerclage since 1998. In 1998, Professor Keun-Young Lee succeeded in performing emergency cervical cerclage surgery for the first time in Korea, preserving all the amniotic membrane that escaped from the uterus.
