Hallym and Oulu experts discuss issues on Digital revolution in medicine: Fast Internet, Artificial Intelligence and Big Data for personalized medicine

Under the theme of 'Digital revolution in medicine: Fast Internet, artificial intelligence and big data for personalized medicine', the 6th Hallym-Oulu International Symposium was successfully held at University of Oulu in Finland on October 18, 2018.
Participants including 10 prominent speakers of both Hallym University and University of Oulu have discussed and shared their knowledge on the current issues related to the fourth industrial revolution technologies such as AI and big data that are transforming medicine these days.
Dean Emeritus Markku Savolainen of the college of medicine at University of Oulu spoke in his welcoming address about how both institutions have built and maintained this strong relationship, and congratulated the sixth-year of joint academic collaboration. He also emphasized that both Hallym and Oulu are important partners to each other that have similar vision and mission.
The morning session began with presentations on ‘5G/6G Telecommunication Networks as Enablers for Medical ICT’, ‘Development and Clinical Application of Medical A.I.: Experiences from Hallym University Medical Center’, ‘Molecular Subtyping of HNSCCs (Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinomas) Using TCGA (The Cancer Genome Atlas) Genomic Data’, ‘The Serrated Colorectal Adenocarcinoma’, and ‘Implementation of Watson for Genomics for NGS Data on Patients with Hematologic Malignancies’.
After lunch, speakers presented on ‘Factors Affecting Long-term Abstinence Rate: The Smoking Cessation Program of National Health Insurance Service’, ‘Ophthalmological aspects in the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966', ‘Automatic Knee Osteoarthritis Diagnosis from Plain Radiographs: A Deep Learning-Based Approach’, ‘Predicting stroke outcomes based on the big-data in acute ischemic stroke: Linked data between Prospective Hospital-based Stroke Registry and Korean Administrative Claims Database’, and ‘Design and Development of Health Behavior Change Support Systems.’
On the next day, there was a guided tour of Oulu Health Labs, Test Lab Oulu, and Oulu University Hospital, followed by the meeting with Rector Jouko Niinimäki and another meeting with Chairman Kyösti Oikarinen of the City Board of Oulu. Participants had a meaningful time by learning about the modern technologies developed by the labs as well as the current status and future prospect for the city of Oulu.
Overall, all of the participants enjoyed the time they spent together in Oulu.
"We are living in a world where innovative technologies are shaping all sorts of industries, and healthcare industry is definitely on the top of the list. Therefore, the importance of staying ahead of the trends cannot be stressed enough," Chair Professor Yong-Sun Kim said in his closing remarks.
"In this regard, I believe it was very meaningful for all of us to share our knowledge and experience on those changes in medical paradigm. I firmly believe that today's symposium has not only become a venue for sharing thoughts and research outcomes in the field but also laid the foundation for opening a new chapter in digital revolution in medicine," he added.
