Hallym University Kangnam Sacred Heart Hospital held a seminar on Parkinson’s disease at the Mikel Hall in the hospital on May 3, 2012.
As part of Red Tulip Campaign in commemoration of the World Parkinson’s Day, this event was attended by more than 120 participants including patients with Parkinson’s disease and their family, and local residents. The program consisted of two lectures: “Motor and Non-motor Symptoms in Parkinson's Disease, and Non-Motor Symptoms Questionnaire” by Dr. Suk Yun Kang of neurology and “Spinal nerve block for treatment of spinal disorder” by Dr. Tak-Geun Cho of neurosurgery. Participants also joined a question and answer session for a better understanding of the disease.
The World Parkinson’s Day is celebrated annually on April 11, the birthday of Dr. James Parkinson who first described the disease in his “Essay on the Shaking Palsy” in 1817. To increase awareness of Parkinson’s disease and support patients with the disease and their family, many academies and medical institutions hold the “Red Tulip” Campaign every year. The Red Tulip was launched as the worldwide symbol of Parkinson’s disease at the 9th World Parkinson’s Day Conference in Luxembourg in 2005.
