The following is a full-text of the congratulatory address by Professor Anders Hallberg, President emeritus, Uppsala University, Sweden, at the International Symposium for the 30th Anniversary of Hallym University on May 14, 2012, at COEX, Seoul:-Ed.

Chairman Yoon,
President Lee,
Esteemed colleagues,
Dear friends,

Today — perhaps more than ever before in history — research is a global business. In many ways, this places a greater responsibility upon scientists and scholars. Mass communication, technological advancement and expanding channels for the exchange of knowledge help us to share ideas and innovations.

I stand here today as a representative of one of Hallym University’s many international partners. Over a relatively short period of time our partnership has grown into a fruitful cooperation between my own set of learning and your university. 30 years of successful presence have matured into today’s valued operations that Uppsala University — with its more than five centuries of existence — can truly value and appreciate.

If research is a global business, the problems that we face in meeting the new challenges often prove to be local. Improving university infrastructure and organization can help us to solve some of these problems. In coordinating efforts locally, we can improve our outreach and cooperative capabilities. In that, every opportunity to share with others and to learn from others must be cherished.

The topic of this conference — Translational Neurosciences — is indeed a highly important one. I want to thank the representatives of Hallym University and the organizers of the conference for the initiative that has given us the opportunity to — again — share with others and learn from others. The impressive roster of participants from Asia, Europe and the US assures the high standards of the forthcoming proceedings.

Finally, let me congratulate Hallym University on the first 30 years. Your collective efforts in research and higher education is sure to galvanize the established partnerships with friends and colleagues worldwide as well as securing the university’s continuing success as a valued institution in your own country.

Mighty Hallym — may you continue to prosper!
