Hallym University Medical Center(HUMC) held the International Symposium for the 30th Anniversary of Hallym University at the Grand Ballroom, COEX in Seoul, on May 14, 2012. Under the theme of ‘Frontiers in Translational Neurosciences: From Bench to Bedside,’ medical professionals from various countries including the U.S., Italy, and Japan shared their thoughts and knowledge on issues in neurosciences.
More than 300 experts from hospitals, clinics, research institutions and universities attended the meeting and participated in lively discussions. Presentations and discussions focused on three topics: Protein Misfolding-Associated Neurodegenerative Diseases; Brain Mapping and Molecular Imaging; and Recent Advances in Clinical Research of Cerebrovascular Disease.
For the symposium, Hallym invited four world-renowned speakers from Hallym’s affiliated institutions abroad: Professor Paolo Bernardi of Biomedical Sciences at University of Padova; Professor Scott A. Small of Neurology at Columbia University; Professor Karen Duff of Pathology and Cell Biology at Columbia University; and Professor Izumi Nagata of Neurosurgery at Nagasaki University.
The symposium started out with opening remarks by Dr. Hae-Ran Lee, President of Hallym University Medical Center. President Lee congratulated the 30th birthday of Hallym University by saying, “Today, we are gathered here to celebrate Hallym’s 30th anniversary and to share all of your extensive experiences and profound medical knowledge under the theme of “Frontiers in Translational Neurosciences: From Bench to Bedside. In addition, we feel it a great honor to listen to expert thoughts with Columbia University, Padova University and Nagasaki University, among others.”
Professor Anders Hallberg, President emeritus of Uppsala University in Sweden congratulated the opening of the symposium by saying, “I stand here today as a representative of one of Hallym University’s many international partners. Over a relatively short period of time our partnership has grown into a fruitful cooperation between my own set of learning and your university. 30 years of successful presence have matured into today’s valued operations that Uppsala University — with its more than five centuries of existence — can truly value and appreciate.”
Meanwhile, the specific programs including topics and speakers are as follows:
■ Session I: Protein Misfolding-Associated Neurodegenerative Diseases (1)
■ Session II: Protein Misfolding-Associated Neurodegenerative Diseases (2)
■ Session III: Brain Mapping and Molecular Imaging
■ Session IV: Recent Advances in Clinical Research of Cerebrovascular Disease
