Dr. Hyung-Jong Kim, professor of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital, recently completed 100 cases of artificial ear cochlear implant. Since he performed the first implant on a patient with profound hearing loss in June, 2003, Dr. Kim has performed more than 10 surgeries every year. The artificial ear cochlear implant is a type of a otorhinolaryngological surgery to restore hearing in a patient with profound hearing loss due to impairment of auditory cells in a cochlear canal by stimulating his auditory nerves through an implanted electronic device that changes auditory stimuli into electronic signals.

“Even profound hearing loss patients can restore their hearing through this procedure and auditory trainings,” Dr. Kim said, “Since the auditory training is hard and requires plenty of time, more care, support and encouragement of their family could help the patients’ fast recovery.”
