The 4th Hallym-Uppsala International Symposium was held at the Rudbeck Hall in Uppsala University on May 4. Under the theme, ‘Biomarkers: From Bench to Clinic,’ professors of both institutions shared their medical knowledge and clinical experiences and participated in lively discussions. The symposium covered a variety of issues form basic to clinical areas of biomarkers in cardiology, gynecology, hepatology, and neurodegenerative diseases.

A 7-member Hallym medical delegation, headed by Dr. Dai-Won Yoon, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Ilsong Educational Foundation, visited Uppsala for this meeting. Among other Hallym delegates were Dr. Hae-Ran Lee, President of Hallym University Medical Center(HUMC), Dr. Yong-Sun Kim, Executive Vice President for Health and Biomedical Sciences, Dr. Geun-Young Lee of obstetrics & gynecology, Dr. Dong Joon Kim of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Dr. Seonghoon Choi of Cardiology, and professor Eun-Kyoung Choi of Ilsong Institute of Life Science.

At the opening, professor Anders Hallberg, Uppsala President, said, “Uppsala and Hallym established collaborative relations since 2008 which turned out to be greatly contributory to the development of both institutions. I am convinced that this 4th gathering will be another valuable chance to share our knowledge and experience on biomarker research.”

Chairman Dai-Won Yoon congratulated the opening of the symposium by saying, “We are thinking of this symposium as a valuable learning experience to share our views with Uppsala speakers who are the world’s top-notch professionals in science and technology,” and add, “I want to thank you all the speakers of Uppsala who have acknowledged us to share their most advanced ideas in this medical field.”

Since Hallym delegation visited Uppsala in 2008, the two institutions held four academic symposiums in Seoul and Uppsala every year. This year’s meeting was organized by Uppsala professors and the 5th gathering is scheduled in Seoul next year.
